Simple Online File Backup

Backup of files has become increasingly difficult with the accumulation of music, video, image and personal folders on the typical home computer. Flash drives work well for transporting files from one machine to another, but are limited in capacity. It is possible to perform large capacity backups to an external drive, but the complexity often means infrequent execution of the job. The burning of CDs/DVDs is slow, cumbersome and limited. Many of the solutions are too elaborate for the average user. An alternative solution is online backup.

Security is not an issue with online backups since encryption is performed locally before the transport. Data is then stored on servers located in data centers which employ the highest security standards.

Backups can be scheduled and performed automatically. Bandwidth utilization is limited since only changed files are backed up. Bandwidth throttling is regulated insuring other high priority jobs receive appropriate provisioning.

File restoration is simple. There are several options available such as back in time, complete restore or file restore.

There are hundreds of online backup services available. The fees charged are comparable from one to another. Fees may be based on a cost per gigabyte, cost per account or cost per computer. Some offer a free trial period for home users. Others offer free storage up to a defined capacity, perhaps five gigabytes.

The best course of action is to take advantage of the services offering free trial periods. This will provide a good experience of the features for the specific product under consideration. Read the financials and check out the support record of each company. Find user reviews for each service under evaluation. Information is readily available for uptime, customer support and reliability. Select a product that fits your requirements.

Keep Your Uniqueness, Avoid Identity Theft

The world-wide web opens doors to everyone, the good and the bad of society. Open access requires each individual to take necessary steps to protect their identity. It is mandatory to be proactive or identity could be stolen.

Identity theft occurs when information is stolen from an individual with the intent of utilizing the knowledge to profit through the perpetration of a fraud. The information can be used to open new credit accounts, obtain utilities or rent a home. Important data can easily be stolen from the unaware.

It is best to never allow a credit card to leave your sight. It may be best to bring sufficient cash to restaurants or any place where they walk off with your card. The information on the magnetic strip of the card can easily be skimmed with an unauthorized card reader. A reader is easily obtained and carried in a pocket.

Shred your documents. Dumpster diving is still one of the most common ways to steal information. It is well worth the money to purchase a shredder that cross-cuts a document into fragments not easily reassembled. Shred many documents prior to tossing out for the trash man. Activate electronic billing where possible. The data is accessed locally, but stored on the secure servers of the business.

Wallets and purses are frequently stolen. Carry only the cards you will need on any specific trip. Keep a firm grasp on your wallet or purse at all times. Wallets are safer in a front pocket and purses should have a strong strap that is wrapped around the arm or shopping cart.

Never give away your information. Legitimate banks and government agencies do not transact business over the phone or through email. Negotiate business with established, well-documented organizations where you have initiated the contact.

Everyone has a responsibility to stay aware. There are fee based services available that may help an individual to initiate actions to protect identity.
